There’s Something About That Sound
We all know that sound of summer. That high pitched noise that almost sounds like heat. That sound, of course, is made by cicadas. In a later post we’ll go in depth describing them, but in today’s post we find out about those holes in the ground.
Finding An Exit
Those holes in the ground are caused by cicadas (not pine bark beetles as some might think). They are made by the cicadas as they burrow out of the ground. The cicada nymphs exit the holes, molt into their adult stage, fly away (sometimes flying at unsuspecting arborists), mate, and die. It’s sort of a quick end to their lives.
