Mushroom Monday: Meadow Mushroom (Agaricus campestris)

Today’s Mushroom Monday mushroom is the Meadow Mushroom (Agaricus campestris).  It’s related to button mushrooms that can be found at grocery stores, and is an interesting mushroom to learn about.

What do Meadow Mushrooms Look Like?
The Cap

Meadow mushrooms have white or light gray colored caps.  They’re smooth, dry, curved, but can be almost flat, and they grow to be one to four inches across.  When the mushroom is young it can have a partial veil covering it.

The Gills

The gills of meadow mushrooms have a pink/brown color that darkens as the mushroom ages.  They are crowded and not attached to the stem.

The Stems

The stems can get to be one to two inches tall with a width of a quarter to three quarters of an inch that can taper toward the base.  They start out white but can darken as the mushroom ages.  The stems have a texture that can be smooth or fibrous, and they have a ring that disappears over time.

Lookalikes

Meadow mushrooms are similar in appearance to Amanita bisporigera.

Where do Meadow Mushrooms Grow?

Meadow mushrooms can be found growing in meadows and lawns, either singularly or in groups.  Sometimes they can grow in fairy rings.

What Relationship do Meadow Mushrooms have with Plants?

Meadow mushrooms are saprophytic mushrooms and get nutrients from dead and decaying organic matter.
