Mushroom Monday Shaggy Scalycap

Today’s Mushroom Monday mushroom is the Shaggy Scalycap (Pholiota squarrosa).

Their Name

Shaggy scalycap mushrooms have scales on their stems and caps, which gives them their common name.

Their Caps

Their caps range in size from around 1.18 to 4.72 inches, are convex, dry, and tan in color.  The mushroom can have the remnants of its veil on it.

Their Stems

Their stems are around 1.57 to 4.72 inches in height, also tan in color, and there can sometimes be the mark of the mushroom’s ring on them.

Their Gills

Their gills are crowded and attached.  They start off yellow or white and turn green as the mushroom matures.

Their Association With Trees

Shaggy scalycap mushrooms are saprophytic but may also be parasitic.  They can be found around North America clustering around conifers and hardwoods, and can be particularly associated with spruces and aspens.

Their Scent

Shaggy scalycap mushrooms can have the smell of garlic.
